Etsy Insider: A seller’s perspective – Crushed Botanicals
As a company that places emphasis on small business, it’s important for us to cultivate and maintain healthy relationships with our customers so we can learn, grow, and continue developing solutions to meet their specific needs. On that note, there really is no better way to kick off this week’s Etsy Insider feature, than with an interview with Kelli Hale of Crushed Botanicals- an Etsy seller (living in Houston, TX), and also a recent customer of our Bizelo eRetail Centralized Inventory Managment application!
Kelli has been in business hand crafting her artisanal, chemical free beauty products since 2005, but decided to sell them through Etsy in early February of 2011. She has 110 items currently for sale in her shop, and has seen 791 total sales to date with 100 % positive feedback.
A: Talk to us about your Etsy shop. What is the inspiration behind your products, and what motivated you to sell them online?
K: I have been fascinated with alternative healing modalities for quite sometime (Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, naturopathic, aromatherapy etc). I am appreciative of what botanicals, flowers, organic skincare, and minerals can accomplish in regards to feelings of health and wellness. It feels natural to me, to echo those ideas and create beautiful makeup and skincare. I feel that combining the synergy of healing botanicals and organic ingredients is a true blessing; to do a job that makes a difference to someone who can feel better.
I’ve been motivated to sell online since 2005, when I knew my customers needed a place to re-order that was easier than sending emails back and forth.
A: What items are most popular with your buyers, and why?
K: The number one most popular items are my mineral makeup powder because it’s highly pigmented – so a little goes a long way, and my liquid organic Argan oil based foundation. On the skincare side, my lime toner with real crushed limes has been doing wonders for people’s skin: evening out skintone, adjusting PH, brightening and removing acne…
A: What is it that you enjoy most about the Etsy community?
K: I most enjoy seeing the front page and all the treasuries on Etsy, it’s such an inspiration to see such wonderfully eclectic groups of artists you never have seen before.
A: Is there anything you would like to improve about your Etsy selling experience?
K: Yes! I think the etsy feedback system needs improvement.
A: Well, how does the current feedback system work, and what improvements would you like to see?
K: Many Etsy sellers are in fear of the feedback system. Getting a “negative” means you are unable to respond directly to your own negative as the sellers feedback is private – not truly a fair environment. Things happen and it would be nice to be able to show what happened on your end versus a customer thinking something untoward as they have no information on your side. I have not dealt with that yet, but I am nervous about it happening as I hear horror stories.
A: As an Etsy seller, what do you spend most of your time doing that you’d like to eliminate or reduce?
K: I make and produce my own labels for my products, and there are many lost hours in getting the labels printed, organized and then of course added to the product. I would love to get large quantities done for me, and then save myself the hassle!
A: What are some tools that you use? How do they help your Etsy shop?
K: I use Google Analytics and try to track how people are entering my store, and if my SEO is paying off. I do enjoy downloading the zip file of my store activity, then sorting and pulling out data when possible to see trends.
A: Do you have any other online stores? If so, how do they relate to your Etsy shop?
K: I do not have any other online stores!
